In the so-called "Valle della Cupa", an area located west of the Salento capital characterized by the presence of ancient noble villas and farms surrounded by greenery, we are pleased to offer for sale an ancient monumental villa, known as Villa Carrelli Palombi or Villa Misrachi, of about 1,500 square meters surrounded by a beautiful park of about 3 hectares. There are historical traces of this beautiful and imposing villa as early as the early 19th century and it boasts, inside, the presence of a wonderful camphor tree which is one of the oldest in Europe. The villa consists of a two-storey rectangular-shaped building characterized by two beautiful terraces at its ends and an eclectic architectural style that combines Renaissance, medieval and even oriental elements. The building consists of a total of 33 rooms including halls, bedrooms and services.
On the ground floor there are the service areas, some warehouses and a large kitchen that preserves the charming original structure intact; the elevation of the ground floor is entirely covered with a singular ashlar decorated with seven beautiful pointed arches that frame the windows and the two access doors. In particular, the door aligned with the tree-lined driveway to the Villa, located in the center of the façade and surmounted by the Lecce stone coat of arms of the Carrelli Palombi dukes, introduces the staircase leading to the main floor where the actual residence is developed. characterized by a succession of beautiful rooms frescoed in a yellow-gold color alluding to the richness of the rooms and by decorative elements typical of late nineteenth-century eclecticism. The historical information available, dating back to the early nineteenth century, identifies the first owners in the sisters Angela and Giuseppina Stabile, when the current Villa still consisted of only 7 rooms and had annexed a garden with a vineyard.
A few years later the property passed to the dukes Carrelli Palombi, at the time of which the building was transformed into a holiday home and the park took on the appearance of a forest. But it will be with the subsequent ownership that the Villa and the park will assume the current conformation. Around the early 1930s, in fact, the Greek magnate of Jewish origin Giorgio Elia Misrachi intervened in the organization of the park with the help of the Florentine landscape architect Pietro Porcinai, structuring it in different sectors (at least 14 are recognized) and introducing in addition to those already present some exotic plants including agaves, palms and eucalyptus. On the sides of the driveway there is a beautiful citrus grove and an Italian garden.
There is also an English garden with a Baroque-style entrance portal and a wooded area with holm oaks and cypresses in which we find an artificial cave used as a place of worship. Behind the villa is the secret garden that contains the beautiful specimen of camphor, probably dating back to 1700. The plant has a majestic foliage of about 30 meters in diameter and is considered the second oldest specimen in Europe. The enclosure wall of the secret garden is characterized by very singular pillars reminiscent of ancient amphorae, also present in the famous Villa Reale in Lecce which was the historic main residence of the Carrelli Palombi dukes.
As evidence of the artistic and cultural value of this wonderful Villa and to protect its historical and architectural identity, the Superintendence of Fine Arts has placed a constraint on the entire property, thus confirming but certainly also increasing the uniqueness of this historical asset from immeasurable charm.
